The computer-animated fantasy comedy film Turning Red is scheduled to be released in the United States by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in 2022. Pixar Animation Studios is responsible for the film's production. Domee Shi, making her debut as a feature-length director, helmed the camera for the movie, which she and Julia Cho also co-wrote. Lindsey Collins was the film's producer. Rosalie Chiang, Sandra Oh, Ava Morse, Hyein Park, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Orion Lee, Wai Ching Ho, Tristan Allerick Chen, and James Hong all lend their voices to the characters in this animated short film. Meilin "Mei" Lee, a Chinese-Canadian student of 13 years old who, due to a hereditary curse, transforms into a giant red panda whenever she experiences any intense emotion, is the protagonist of the film Turning Red, which takes place in Toronto, Ontario, in the year 2002. After Shi pitched the idea to Pixar in October 2017, the production of the movie, which was heavily influenced by her childhood in Toronto, did not get underway until 2018. It is the first Pixar film to be directed entirely by a woman and the second Pixar film, after Up, to feature an Asian character as the main protagonist (2009). On February 21, 2022, the film Turning Red was shown in a special presentation at Everyman Borough Yards in London. On March 8, 2022, the film was shown in a similar capacity at the TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto. On March 1, the movie was shown for the first time anywhere in the world at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles. On March 11, the movie was made available on the Disney+ streaming service, along with limited simultaneous showings in select theatres. It was shown in theatres in most countries where Disney+ is not available, earning a total of $17.1 million around the world, and receiving positive reviews from film critics.
